Walnut Springs has a colorful history. During the late 1800's and early 1900's the town was booming with a population of more than 4,000. The city's boom was attributed largely to the Katy Railroad, which ran until the mid 1960's, and its shops. Among the businesses were banks, drug stores, doctors, dentist, lawyers, funeral homesnewspaper office, laundry, dry goods stores, cotton gins, bars and a college. The city also had a stop light in the middle of town. The shops begin declining and left between 1910 and 1920 and the city has had a declining population until the mid 70's when Comanche Peak Steam Electirc Station began construction.
One of the city's main attractions is Historical Katy Park. The park has seven springs which were used by cattle drives for water.
The present school is located on property donated to the school by Col. Buck Barry, Texas Ranger.
